Who says education has to be limited to the confines of a school?

Baguio City lives up to being the center of education in Northern Luzon by setting up unique classrooms—in jail.

In the year 2000, the Baguio City Jail started a literacy program for children in conflict with the law. With the assistance of the Department of Education (DepEd), young people are taught basic subjects like English and Math, as well as Skills and Development subjects like Electronics and Practical Arts. A youth development program is also in place, wherein the children learn about reproductive health, music, arts and sports.

As an added incentive, those who finish their term in jail may be offered scholarships or opportunities to attend enriching seminars.

The children who benefit from the program see it as a source of hope, their first step towards a new life.

Sadly, the program faces many challenges, foremost of which is the lack of funds. There have also been reports that DepEd has stopped sending teachers for the project. It would be a pity if these children are deprived of this life-changing experience.
